GWNZ Charitable Trust

The GWNZ Charitable Trust assists New Zealand women to succeed through providing scholarships and awards for tertiary studies, at home and overseas.

The scholarships and awards are funded by GWNZ Branches and members. Several GWNZ Inc branches or their associated charitable trusts raise funds through their regalia hire businesses. Some of the money raised is donated to the GWNZ Charitable Trust for Fellowships and other awards. Individual members of GWNZ Inc support the NZFGW Charitable Trust through donations and by remembering the GWNZ Charitable Trust in their will. All donations and bequests are used to fund scholarships and awards.

GWNZ Fellowships
Fellowships are post-graduate awards for women’s study or research, usually at doctoral level. Many of our Fellows have been accepted into restricted overseas masters and doctoral programmes at prestigious institutions such as Yale and Harvard in the USA and Oxford and Cambridge in the UK. Our Fellows are engaged in a wide range of research fields, each making a significant contribution to new knowledge in New Zealand and at times, overseas.  Their research impacts on a wide range of people and society in general, not just women, both in New Zealand and globally To apply and for detailed information click here.

GWNZ Susan Byrne Memorial Award
The Susan Byrne Memorial Award is a career change award. It is offered most years to a woman graduate over the age of 35 who is undertaking further tertiary study in order to change her career. This award was started by a bequest from the late Susan Byrne who was enjoying a successful and varied academic career at three New Zealand universities before her untimely death in her 40s. GWNZ Harriette Jenkins Awards
The Harriette Jenkins Awards of up to $3,000 are provided to Graduate Women members (branch and independent members) to assist them with costs associated with their tertiary research or personal study. This is the only award which is restricted to our members. This award emanated from a bequest from a Nelson branch member, Harriette Jenkins, in the 1970s. The GWNZ Charitable Trust also provides funds for the Mildred Keir Second Chance Education Award administered through the New Horizons for Women Trust (NHWT).
